School History

Laerskool Oranjegloed Primary was first known as Laerskool Silkaatskop.

Laerskool Silkaatskop opened its doors for the first time on 16 April 1980. The school was housed completely in a pre-fab building.

Mr. Daan Aspeling was appointed as the first principal. He was later succeeded by Mr. Jan van Rensburg.

In 1981 the school’s name changed to Laerskool Oranjegloed. The name is derived from the orange glow Sasol’s flames cast over the night skies of Secunda. The flame was also depicted on the school badge and the motto was “Vuur en Vlam.”

The school song was written by Dr. Dirkie de Villiers.

A new, more permanent school was later built on a premises in Pieter Wenning street. The new building was occupied during 1991.

To keep in tune with an ever changing South Africa, Oranjegloed decided to become a parallel-medium school. Consequently the name was changed to Laerskool Oranjegloed Primary. The school uniform also changed from the brown and yellow to the new teal, yellow and white. The motto also changed to the Latin “Ale Flammam” to accomodate both languages. It can be translated as “feed the flame”. In 2014 the school became fully fledged english medium school.

Today Oranjegloed is still a force to be reckoned with and the TOP school in the region.
